Fresh, Simple Ingredients
- Sour cream: Full fat sour cream is the base of this creamy dip.
- You can use half sour cream and half greek yogurt for a slightly healthier version.
- If you love a bit of mayo in your dip, you can substitute half the sour cream with regular mayo, I love Duke's brand. Also, try this homemade chipotle mayo on your next sandwich!
- Buttermilk powder: This secret ingredient adds that little zing you love in a good ranch dressing or dip.
- Buttermilk powder is great because it is shelf stable for quite some time and can be used in any recipe that calls for buttermilk. Plus, when you use the powdered version in a recipe like this one, it doesn't water down the final mixture.
- If you can't find this ingredient, it's usually in the baking aisle, substitute real buttermilk or lemon juice.
- Garlic and shallot: I love the taste of fresh garlic and finely diced shallot in this dip.
- You can feel free to substitute garlic powder and onion powder, if desired.
- If you can't find a shallot, swap for onion powder or onion flakes, rather than fresh onion.
- Fresh herbs: You can really taste the difference that fresh dill weed, chives, and flat leaf parsley make in this recipe. If you can't get your hands on fresh herbs, you can substitute dried herbs, the flavor will be slightly less but still delicious.
- Worcestershire sauce: There are many Worcestershire sauces in the U.S. that are labeled gluten-free. I used Lea & Perrin's brand, which is labeled gluten-free.
- Kosher salt and fresh black pepper

Recipe FAQs
This dip with the fresh herbs, garlic, and shallot has more texture to it than a traditional store-bought ranch dressing. If you'd like to make it smoother, use an immersion blender, blender, or food processor to blend the mixture to your desired consistency.
To make a dairy-free ranch dressing, swap the sour cream for dairy-free or vegan sour cream and buttermilk powder for lemon juice. To thin, use a non-dairy milk of your choice, such as coconut milk or almond milk.
Most ranch dressings are gluten-free, as they mainly contain ingredients like mayo, sour cream, herbs and spices. Even with that in mind, it is still important to read the ingredient statement and look for a gluten-free claim on the label. Watch out for salad dressings with malt flavoring, malt vinegar, or wheat-derived soy sauce, as these ingredients do contain gluten.
The majority of Hidden Valley Ranch products are gluten-free, and those containing gluten from wheat, rye, or barley will be clearly listed in the ingredient statement. According to the company, if a product lacks these grains, it likely doesn't contain gluten. Products verified as gluten-free carry a "Gluten Free" claim on the label. Always check the ingredient statement on package labels or reach out to Hidden Valley for clarification.

I’ve always wondered what’s in ranch dressing. Now I know. I’m going to look for Trader Joe’s seasoning. I wonder if it’s on Amazon. ?
